At Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech we teach children who are deaf or hard of hearing to listen and talk. With access to sound provided by cochlear implants or hearing aids and intensive therapy and education, children who are profoundly deaf can learn to listen and talk. The position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and is an integral part of Clarke’s Administrative Leadership Team. The CDO leads Clarke’s development efforts organization-wide working closely with Clarke’s Program and Campus Directors across its five locations. The Chief Development Officer will lead, develop and oversee all aspects of fundraising to provide sustained resources for Clarke. The CDO is responsible for developing, directing and implementing a multi-year, multifaceted fundraising strategy to raise funds and awareness. The CDO will initially raise $3.1 million annually with intent to grow that amount by 5-7% annually over the next five years. Building on the existing fundraising plan, the CDO will expand and enhance Clarke’s fundraising capacity in collaboration with the CEO, Board of Trustees and senior leadership. The CDO will prepare and present revenue reports regularly to the CEO and Board of Trustees.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Management and administration of the organization’s development efforts to include an ambitious multi-year, multifaceted fundraising strategy.
- Lead, mentor and supervise an eight-person Development Team, including staff at five regional offices.
- Manage the department’s revenue and expense budgets, initiatives and calendar of appeals and activities.
- Oversee and strategically enhance the foundation and grants program that currently yields more than $1.2 million annually.
- Cultivate foundation support and transformational giving.
- Lead and oversee the organization’s major gift strategy and manage a portfolio of key donors and prospects working toward successfully closing gift solicitations in the five and six figure range.
- Serve as Clarke’s primary liaison with major donors, foundations and corporate sponsors organization-wide.
- Oversee and drive cultivation and stewardship efforts by other Clarke staff.
- Oversee revitalization of the planned giving program.
- Coach, support and encourage the Board’s development efforts in close collaboration with the CEO.
- Oversee Clarke’s five regional Leadership Councils to raise awareness and funds locally and as pipelines for trustee recruitment.
- Assess, oversee and direct strategies to solicit support and engagement from corporations
- Oversee special events across Clarke’s five locations and create additional opportunities for donor cultivation and engagement.
- Supervise all aspects of a multi-channel annual appeal campaigns.
The ideal candidate possesses strong communication skills, attention to detail and will thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment within an organization that is experiencing rapid change and growth. The individual exhibits:
- Excellent interpersonal skills and relationship building skills
- Ten or more years of senior development experience including developing and implementing an annual fundraising plan and managing a department and budget
- Strong leadership and management skills with an established record as an innovator, collaborative team builder, trainer and motivator
- Ability to exercise independent judgement and strong decision-making skills
- An “outcome orientation” with the ability to effectively manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining the big picture as it relates to the mission and the financial success of the organization
- Demonstrated results soliciting and securing major gifts in the five and six figure range
- Working knowledge of planned giving principles
- Direct experience working with nonprofit board members and leading and managing key volunteers
- Demonstrated success in identifying and securing new foundation grants of five figures and greater
- Demonstrated success generating increased funds through events, annual appeals and online giving
- Ability to work as part of a team, with a variety of people and to collaborate with staff at all organizational levels and across departments and locations
- Strong oral communication skills, including public speaking
- Strong written communication and editing skills and experience writing grant proposals, reports and campaign materials
- Strong organizational skills and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail and focus on excellence
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and hands-on experience with Raiser’s Edge or another donor database
- Commitment to the organization’s mission and desire to learn the field
- Willingness and ability to travel
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
